D-Day

Great days deserve observance. On Tuesday, September 29, three of music’s greatest gay icons — Madonna, Mariah and Barbra — vie for the No. 1 spot with new album releases. We just might need a vacation day to take it all in. Modern Tonic is celebrating by giving away all three below.

Madonna
, Celebration
If ever there were doubt Madonna is the queen of relevant reinvention, the two-disc 36-song Celebration is crowning proof. New tracks “Revolver” (featuring Lil Wayne) and “Celebration” keep the “Best Of” party going without adding too much to the oeuvre, but grab the iTunes special edition for the delightfully disco-y throwback bonus track “It’s So Cool.”

Mariah Carey
, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
Like a love song Dial-o-Matic, Mimi’s mostly mellow, heartbreak-laden latest has a hip-hop inflected R&B jam for whatever your stage of loss or grief. Feeling angry? “Obsessed” and “Out of My Face” channel what you need with ridiculous saucy rhymes — and a full-on marching band. Bargaining? The slow drawl of “H.A.T.E.U.” is wistfully honest. Ready for the makeup sex? “Impossible” drips with naughty name checks and a Barry White vibe. A powerful remake of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is” is the icing on the acceptance cake.

Barbra Streisand
, Love Is the Answer
Like sipping on a smooth cognac while the rain patters outside, Streisand’s latest studio album is pure sonic butter. In collaboration with pianist/producer Diane Krall, Babs breathes new life into a varied set of love-centric jazz standards augmenting their classic arrangements with a richness aching to be emulated in piano bars. Standouts include the bittersweet bossa nova of “Gentle Rain,” Jacques Brel’s “If You Go Away (Ne Me Quitte Pas)” and affirming opener “Here’s To Life.”

Modern Tonic is giving away 5 sets of the three albums to our readers plus a limited edition Madonna lithograph and T-shirt. To enter, become a fan of Modern Tonic on Facebook, then write on our wall which of the three superstars you think will be number one on the Billboard album chart the week after release. The note you post is your automatic entry into the contest. We will pick five winners at random on Wednesday, October 7 (the day the chart positions are announced) out of those people who correctly guess who will be the #1 artist.
