Girls, Interrupted

Television is rarely adept at depicting high school angst without burying it under melodramatic histrionics (90210) or several pounds of cheap hair extensions (Gossip Girl) or a vicious cycle of comas and organ-eating dogs (One Tree Hill — really!). Thankfully, the award-winning Web series Anyone But Me realizes that high school is hellish enough without the bells, whistles and ridiculous couture uniforms.

Vivian (Rachael Hip-Flores) seems to have everything: a great relationship with her firefighter father, a sexy girlfriend, Aster (Nicole Pacent), and a healthy sense of self in her little corner of New York City. But a move to the suburbs throws Vivian into her awkward aunt Jodie's house — and back into the closet. Vivian has to decide how much of her old self to reveal in her new environment. The writing, acting and production are refreshingly underplayed, allowing for the simple but affecting stories to unfurl without quippy artifice, laughable product placement or unnecessary operatic shrieking. The result is a compelling slow-burn of teenage indecision and sexual navigation that's genuinely, even painfully, familiar.
